The memory/logic interface in FPGAs with large embedded memory arrays

چکیده
|As the capacities of eld-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) grow, they will be used to implement much larger circuits than ever before. These larger circuits often require signiicant amounts of storage. In order to address these storage requirements, FPGAs with large embedded memory arrays are now being developed by several vendors. One of the crucial components of an FPGA with on-chip memory is the routing structure between the memory arrays and the logic resources. If this memory/logic interface is not exible enough, many circuits will be unroutable, while if it is too exible, it will be slower and consume more chip area than is necessary. In this paper, we show that an interconnect in which each memory pin can connect to between 4 and 7 logic routing tracks is best in terms of both area and speed. We also show that by adding switches to support nets that connect multiple memory arrays, we can reduce the memory access time by up to 25% and improve the routability slightly.

Memory/Logic Interconnect Flexibility in FPGAs with Large Embedded Memory Arrays
As the capacities of eld-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) grow, it becomes desirable to create FPGAs with embedded memory arrays. This paper examines the exibility of the interconnect structure that joins memory and logic. For architectures with only a few memory arrays, we nd that both the routability and the delay of circuits are insensitive to the memory/logic interconnect exibility, which i...
متن کاملImplementing logic in FPGA memory arrays: heterogeneous memory architectures
It has become clear that large embedded configurable memory arrays will be essential in future FPGAs. Embedded arrays provide high-density high-speed implementations of the storage parts of circuits. Unfortunately, they require the FPGA vendor to partition the device into memory and logic resources at manufacture-time. This leads to a waste of chip area for customers that do not use all of the ...
متن کاملEmbedded Processor Based Built-In Self-Test and Diagnosis of Logic and Memory Resources in FPGAs
We present an embedded processor based approach for Built-In Self-Test (BIST) and diagnosis of programmable logic and memory resources in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The resources under test include the programmable logic blocks (PLBs), large random access memories (RAMs), and digital signal processors (DSPs) in all of their modes of operation. The approach is applicable to any FPGA...
متن کاملAutonomous Built-in Self-Test Methods for SRAM Based FPGAs
Built-in Self-Test (BIST) approaches for Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) based Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) must be capable of fully testing the resources in the device. A summary of current techniques is presented in this paper that covers the three main components of modern FPGAs: logic blocks, interconnects and embedded FPGA cores. Overhead requirements, coverage capability, tra...
متن کاملBuilt-In Self-Test of Embedded SEU Detection Cores in Virtex-4 and Virtex-5 FPGAs
A Built-In Self-Test (BIST) approach is presented for the Internal Configuration Access Port (ICAP) and Frame Error Correcting Code (ECC) logic cores embedded in Xilinx Virtex-4 and Virtex-5 Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The Frame ECC logic facilitates the detection of Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in the FPGA configuration memory. The ICAP provides read and write access to the configura...
